Edinburgh’s Languages

Edinburgh’s linguistic landscape is incredibly varied.  The capital hosts a large Polish community (around 61,000 people) as well as large numbers of Punjabi, Urdu, Spanish, Arabic, Cantonese, French and Gaelic speakers.  Add in the huge numbers of tourists who travel from across the globe to experience Edinburgh’s rich history and culture to the equation and it is safe to say that a simple walk down Princes Street can turn into a symphony of various languages.

The total number of languages spoken in Edinburgh is debatable but a conservative estimate is around 90. NALDIC (National Association for Language Development in the Curriculum) counted an astounding 102 languages were spoken in schools across Edinburgh.  Based on this, it can only be assumed that the languages spoken in our Scottish capital will continue to rise. Edinburgh has the highest number of students in Scotland after Glasgow, whose first language isn’t English, Gaelic, Scots, Doric or Sign Language, showing how linguistically diverse the future population is.
