Edinburgh is the seat of Scottish Government and acts the diplomatic face for Scotland. The Global Language Services office is based a short stone’s throw from the Parliament and the regular stream of diplomats, officials and tourists keeps our language experts busy with all kinds of exciting projects.

Throughout the years we have gradually built up our service range and today we are happy to offer our language services in any language for any industry.

Edinburgh’s Languages

Edinburgh’s linguistic landscape is incredibly varied. The capital hosts a large Polish community (around 61,000 people) as well as large number of Punjabi, Urdu, Arabic, Cantonese, French and Gaelic speakers. Add the huge numbers of tourists who travel from across the globe to experience Edinburgh’s rich history and culture to the equation and it is safe to say that a simple walk down the street can turn into a language workout on the ears.

The total number of languages spoken in Edinburgh is debatable but a conservative estimate is around 90. NALDIC (National Association for Language Development in the Curriculum) counted an astounding 102 languages were spoken across the schools in Edinburgh. Based of this, it can only be assumed that the languages spoken in our Scottish capital will continue to rise. Edinburgh has the second highest number of students in Scotland, after Glasgow, whose first language isn’t English, Gaelic, Scots, Doric or Sign Language, showing how linguistically diverse the future population is.
