Afrikaans / Afrikaans
Afrikaans is a Low Franconian West Germanic language spoken by around seven million people in South Africa and Namibia. It is spoken to a much lesser extent in Botswana and Zimbabwe. Afrikaans holds official language status in South Africa and is a recognised minority language in Namibia and Botswana.
Afrikaans is descended from Dutch, which was introduced to southern Africa during Dutch colonisation in the 18th century. Although Afrikaans has been influenced by Portuguese, Bantu languages, Malay and Khoisan languages, it is most closely related to Dutch. Approximately 90% of Afrikaans vocabulary is derived from Dutch and the two languages remains a mutually intelligible to this day.
