Slovak / Slovenčina
Slovak is a West Slavic language spoken by approximately 5 million people mainly in Slovakia. It is an official language in Slovakia, Czech Republic and the Vojvodina region of Serbia. There are smaller Slovak-speaking communities in Hungary, Russia and Ukraine where Slovak is a recognised minority language.
While documents written in Slovak started to appear in the 15th century, an accepted literary standard would have to wait until the early part of the 19th century. Slovak literature enjoyed a renaissance period between 1918 and 1938, which helped drive the standardisation of the language. Modern Slovak developed from this standardised version.
